An ancient 'Pyu' Capital lies 8 km south-east of Pyay (Prome), which is located about 178 mile north-west of Yangon. Archaeological discoveries indicate that the city attained its height of prosperity between the 5th and 9th centuries.
Pyay is one of the famous cities in Myanmar and located in Bago Division, near the bank of Ayeyarwaddy River, the biggest and the largest river in Myanmar and also an economic artery. When you look at on each side of the river, will see many pleasant sceneries with the mountain ranges.
The remains at Thi-ri-khit-taya are palace site, the prototype of Bagan vaulted temple such as Lemyethna and East Zegu, the cylinder-shaped Bawbawgyi Pagoda, Payagyi and Payama stupas each with a high conical dome and the Archaeological Museum.
Places of interest in Pyay are Shwesandaw Pagoda, a gigantic sitting Buddha Statue of Hsehtatkyi Pagoda, Shwe Phone Pwint Library, the beautiful scenery of majestic Ayeyarwaddy River and Akauk Taung.
Leaving for Pyay after breakfast. Overland drive from Yangon 178 mile (285 km) through the never ended Paddy fields. One the way, a break for stretch out after 3-hour drive at LetPadan. Proceed to Pyay.
Pyay sightseeing; Crossing mighty Ayeyarwaddy River over Nawaday bridge to the other side and visit a famous pagoda ShweBonTha Muni, it will be a great view of Ayeyarwaddy River and Pyay.
After lunch, visit old city `` Thirikhitayar '' of 2000 year and it's environs including several pagodas and museum. Next to a visit to Buddhist nunnery. Evening visit to the most famous Shwesandaw Pagoda and sunset from there.
Ancient Buddha Images Carved on Stone Walls of Akauk Mountain. Akauk Mountain is situated near the bank of Ayeyarwaddy River between the southern most part of Pyay District and northern most part of Hinthata District can be reached by waterway from Pyay. When you arrived at Htonbo Village, Pandaung Township, from there about 30 miles to get to Akauk Mountain.
One of the amazing places where many Buddha Images were carved on the mountain site, near the bank of Ayeyarwaddy River. Akauk Mountain has green forest cover and it is very pleasant place.
This mountain is the auspicious land, filled with historic ShweMyintin Pagoda as well as other pagodas and religious edifies. Moreover, there are ravines, gorges, streams and natural scenic beauty for visitors for relaxation and recreation. It is believed that those Buddha Images are carved since many years ago. Artistic craftsman who travelled along the River while doing their business has carved these.
